Medicine’s Mother Teresa Award
The Evolution of Medicine could be described as “What goes around, comes around” as we now can see the incredible effects of a plant based diet in relation to medicine. Eating a ‘whole food plant based’ diet is the healthiest diet on the planet. And if we eat what grows out of the Earth, it’s not expensive; certainly far less than meat, fish, or poultry. The connection with the above proverb is because Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, over 2000 years ago is quoted as stating, “Food is Medicine, Medicine is Food”. In the past 10 years we have seen the increasing movements toward Vegan and Plant Based diets for both animal rights and health as well as planetary survival.
And we have seen one new diet after another. Diet is a Greek word meaning ‘a mode of living’ and it refers to what we consume from food and drink; it’s not a special way of eating. A diet is what we eat…even tho it has been co-opted by the weight loss industry; it has nothing to do with the concept of weight loss/gain. A diet is what we consume. And did you know that a diet of whole plant foods is the healthiest diet on our planet? Yep. And Vegan Diets are right up there too; in fact they are far superior to our SAD proving again that we are not designed, physically or mentally to eat animals. Vegan diets do contain substances other than WFPB diets; especially processed foods, oils and various suspicious ingredients. From a health standpoint, as I see it, the reduction and discontinued consumption of animal products is key to our improved health and longevity. But not everyone is on board.
Vegans and the Plant Base’ers remain a small percentage of non-animal consumers. The scientific data is there and has been available for the past 20 years or so but common knowledge and implementation is lacking. Just two weeks ago a friend I have known for years and knows that I am a physician asked me, “Where do you get your protein?” ‘Where do you get your protein’ has got to be a huge feather in the meat industries Marketing Strategies Handbook. The idea that meat and protein was the gold standard has permeated our society…and not for the good of our society. The other side of the coin is that profit is the gold standard in marketing.
Another factor is that most physicians are not aware of the connection between food and health; if they did they would be recommending plant based diets. Kim Williams, M.D. as president of the Am. College of Cardiology stated, “There are two types of cardiologists, vegans and those who have not read the data.” The word is getting out there. There is a movement underfoot and one of those leaders is Micheal Greger, M.D. of NutritionFacts.org. He and his staff research medical articles, information and filter out the truth which he displays freely via email; www.nutritionfacts.org. He does this so we don’t have to. Then there’s Dr. Neal Barnard…his group has been a thorn in the govt. side promoting health and they are key drivers in stopping animal testing. Dean Ornish, M.D. continues to prove the benefits of lifestyle over various diseases; and there are others out there as well. The Esseslstyn family, the Campbell family, Ocean and John Robins, and others. Of course the development of the America College of Lifestyle Medicine has got to be in the running. All are all doing a great job…I picked the one I thought would have the most impact on the future of healthcare.
After reviewing the list my selection for the annual ‘Mother Teresa Award in Medicine’* goes to Micheal Klaper, M.D. for his work in Moving Medicine Forward. He and Plant Pure Communities are working together to spread the nutrition word to the new members of our healing professions which will have incredible impact on medical treatment for the future. Dr. Klaper has been one of the prominent leaders in the WFPB group however this past year he retired from his practice and is devoting his time and energy in teaching medical students to include plant based nutrition. He Here is part of his year end email to his supporters:
“What a remarkable year this has been! Clearly, we are at a tipping point as Western medicine steadily evolves to include plant-based nutrition as a primary means of treating and reversing chronic disease. Moving Medicine Forward’s mission is to open the minds of the next generation of doctors to this incredibly powerful tool to heal their patients. I am excited and inspired to be a part of this long overdue “awakening” happening in medicine! Through my in-person appearances and electronic webinars we have reached well over 1,000 medical students across North America and in Europe. The positive response we have had from medical students, clinical faculty and the public affirms we must continue our efforts to keep that momentum going!
